New Zealand Visa Applications Move Online From October 2026

From 1 October 2026, many New Zealand visitor and transit visa applications must be lodged online, with paper forms limited to exceptional cases.

Immigration News

New Zealand is continuing its shift toward a more digital immigration system. From 1 October 2026, applicants for a wide range of visitor and transit visa categories will need to submit new applications through Immigration New Zealand’s enhanced Immigration Online system.

The change is relevant for people planning to visit, transit through, or support family travel to New Zealand, as well as for businesses, event organisers, tour groups and other temporary visa applicants. It does not change the underlying visa requirements, but it does change how many applications must be lodged.

For applicants, the key point is simple: if your New Zealand Visa category is included in the change, Immigration NZ will expect you to apply online from 1 October 2026 unless exceptional circumstances apply.

What has changed

From 1 October 2026, paper forms will no longer be the standard application method for the affected visitor and transit visa categories. Applications will instead need to be made through the enhanced Immigration Online system.

The change covers the Transit Visa and a broad range of Visitor Visa categories. These include the standard Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa and Group Visitor Visa, including group visitors under Approved Destination Status.

Several more specialised visitor categories are also included. These include Academic Visitor, Adoption Visitor, Adoption Pre-citizenship Visitor, Antarctic Traveller, Arts and Music Festival, Culturally Arranged Marriage, and Crew Joining a Ship or Plane visitor visas.

The affected list also includes Dismissed Worker, Escort of Medical Patients, German Law Student, Guardian, Medical Treatment and Occupational Registration visitor visas. Parent and Grandparent, Pitcairn Islander, Private Yacht or Plane, Short-term Entertainment Act, Sports Events, Super Yachts, Tour Escort and Visiting Media visitor visas will also move to the online system.

Immigration New Zealand has said the online process is intended to make it easier for applicants to complete forms, upload supporting documents and track progress. The enhanced system includes online guidance and questions that respond to an applicant’s circumstances. It also includes features such as automatic passport information capture through an Identity Document Reader, which may help reduce manual data-entry errors.

The update does not affect applications already submitted. If Immigration New Zealand receives a paper application for an affected visa category before 1 October 2026, that application will continue to be processed under the current process. Applicants in that situation do not need to submit a second online application simply because the system is changing.

What this means for migrants

Although the announcement is focused on visitor and transit visas, it will also matter to many migrants and families who are planning travel linked to a wider New Zealand journey. For example, some people may be visiting family, attending events, seeking medical treatment, joining a vessel or aircraft, or preparing for future study, work or residence plans.

The move to online lodgement means applicants should be ready to manage their application digitally. This may include creating or using an Immigration Online account, preparing digital copies of documents, checking file quality before upload, and monitoring online messages or status updates after submission.

It is important not to assume that every visitor visa is included. Some paper application pathways will remain available through existing channels for now. These include Partner and Child of Military Visitor Visas, Partner and Child of Student Visitor Visas, Partner and Child of Worker Visitor Visas, and Partner and Child of a New Zealander Visitor Visas.

The Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa, Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa and Refugee Claimant Visitor Visa are also outside the October 2026 change. Immigration New Zealand has indicated that paper applications for some remaining categories may be phased out in the future, but the source material does not confirm any immediate change for those categories.

After 1 October 2026, paper applications for affected categories will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances. Applicants who believe they cannot apply online will need to contact Immigration New Zealand to discuss their situation.

What to do next

If you are planning to travel to New Zealand from October 2026 onwards, check your visa category before you begin. If your category is affected, prepare to lodge online and allow enough time to gather the correct documents. Immigration New Zealand also recommends applying early, particularly during busy travel periods.

Before lodging, make sure the information in your application is accurate and consistent with your supporting documents. Digital systems can make application tracking easier, but they do not remove the need to meet visa instructions or provide complete information.

If your travel plans are part of a wider intention to study, work, join family or Move to New Zealand, it may be helpful to understand how your temporary visa plans fit with your longer-term pathway.
