New Zealand Visa Applications Moving Online from 1 October 2026

From 1 October 2026, selected New Zealand visitor and transit visa applications must be lodged online through Immigration Online.

Immigration News

Immigration New Zealand has confirmed that selected visitor and transit visa applications will move fully online from 1 October 2026. From that date, paper applications for the affected categories will generally no longer be accepted, and applicants will need to use the enhanced Immigration Online system.

This is part of Immigration New Zealand’s wider move towards digital visa processing. Many visitor visa applications and all transit visa applications can already be submitted online, but this update makes online submission the required pathway for a number of temporary entry categories.

What has changed

From 1 October 2026, applicants for selected New Zealand Visa categories will need to apply through Immigration Online rather than by paper form. The affected categories include the Transit Visa, General Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa and Group Visitor Visa, including Approved Destination Status applications.

Other affected visitor visa categories include the Academic Visitor Visa, Adoption Visitor Visa, Adoption Pre-citizenship Visitor Visa, Antarctic Traveller Visitor Visa, Arts and Music Festival Visitor Visa, Culturally Arranged Marriage Visitor Visa, Crew Joining a Ship or Plane Visitor Visa, Dismissed Worker Visitor Visa, Escort of Medical Patients Visitor Visa, German Law Student Visitor Visa, Guardian Visitor Visa and Medical Treatment Visitor Visa.

The online-only requirement will also apply to the Occupational Registration Visitor Visa, Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, Pitcairn Islander Visitor Visa, Private Yacht or Plane Visitor Visa, Short-term Entertainment Act Visitor Visa, Sports Events Visitor Visa, Super Yachts Visitor Visa, Tour Escort Visitor Visa and Visiting Media Visitor Visa.

Paper applications received before 1 October 2026 will continue to be processed as normal. Applicants who have already lodged a paper application before the change takes effect do not need to take further action because of this update.

Immigration New Zealand has said paper forms for the affected categories will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances after 1 October 2026. Applicants who believe they cannot apply online will need to contact Immigration New Zealand to discuss their circumstances.

What this means for migrants

For most people applying for an affected visitor or transit visa, the main practical change is the application method. Instead of preparing and sending paper forms, applicants will be expected to complete the application online, upload supporting documents digitally, and track the application through Immigration Online.

Immigration New Zealand says the enhanced online system is designed to make the process simpler and more efficient. The platform gives applicants status updates, provides built-in guidance, and adapts questions depending on the applicant’s circumstances. This may help reduce incomplete applications and avoid some processing delays caused by missing or incorrect information.

The system also includes features such as automatic passport information capture through an identity document reader. Immigration New Zealand says this is intended to reduce errors and give applicants better visibility throughout the application process.

It is important to note that this update is about how applications are submitted. It does not, based on the source material, change the underlying visa criteria or guarantee a faster decision. Applicants still need to meet the requirements for the visa category they are applying under and provide the evidence requested by Immigration NZ.

Some visitor visa categories are not included in this change at this stage. These include visas for partners and children of military personnel, students, workers and New Zealanders, as well as the Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa, Temporary Retirement Visitor Visa and Refugee Claimant Visitor Visa. Immigration New Zealand has indicated that paper applications for these categories could be removed later, but for now they continue through existing channels.

What to do next

If you are planning temporary travel to New Zealand after 1 October 2026, check whether your intended visa category is included in the online-only change. If it is, allow time to create or access your Immigration Online account, prepare digital copies of your documents, and review the information carefully before submitting.

If you are applying before 1 October 2026 and have already lodged a paper application in one of the affected categories, Immigration New Zealand says it will continue to be processed as normal. You do not need to reapply online simply because of this change.

If your circumstances are complex, or if you are unsure which visa pathway applies to you, it may be helpful to seek personalised guidance before lodging an application. You can get matched with a licensed immigration adviser who can consider your situation and help you understand your options.

Applicants who believe they need to use a paper form after 1 October 2026 should contact Immigration New Zealand directly to discuss whether exceptional circumstances may apply.
